User Promotions + email activation

Hello,

I am trying to configure my site to follow this flow pattern on new user registrations but cannot get it to work.

1. User registers and is placed in "Users Awaiting Email Confirmation"
2. Users confirm email and are placed into usergroup "leechers" (this group cannot download files)
3. Users make first post and are promoted to "registered users"


Now the promotions from step 2 into step 3 i have all fine and dandy. I used the default usergroup mod to place new users into leechers but this skips step 1 and users are able to post without confirming their email address.


Can anyone school me on how i can keep the default registration group forcing user to activate their email and then place them into the leechers group once they confirm their emails?
